Considérant :

que par lettre du 9 janvier 2007, le recourant a retiré le recours de droit administratif qu'il avait interjeté le 2 novembre 2006 contre le jugement rendu le 31 août 2006 par le Tribunal des assurances du canton de Vaud,

par ce motif, le Tribunal fédéral décide :

1. La cause U 524/06 est rayée du rôle ensuite du retrait du recours.

2. Il n'est pas perçu de frais de justice.

3. La présente décision sera communiquée aux parties, au Tribunal des assurances du canton de Vaud et à l'Office fédéral de la santé publique.
