§ 262 Law on the Introduction of the Swiss Civil Code — VI. Enclosures Art. 697 SCC

1. If the owner uses his property as pasture, he must construct and maintain the necessary enclosures to protect neighboring properties.

2. Along streets, roads, and footpaths, property may only be enclosed with barbed wire or other installations if the enclosure is shielded on the street side so that people and animals cannot be injured. This provision does not apply to mountain areas.

3. In the absence of an agreement to the contrary, new enclosures that are situated on the property boundary or at a distance of less than 3 meters from the boundary may reach a height of no more than 2 meters. The government council may issue special regulations in the interest of traffic safety regarding the distance of trees and shrubs as well as the permissible height of enclosures along public roads.

4. The special road policing regulations remain reserved.
