Instruction on the Taking of the Oath of Office

1. The text of the Oath of Office reads: I pledge to respect the Constitution and laws, to fulfill my official duties to the best of my knowledge and conscience, to do everything that promotes the welfare of our state, and to refrain from doing anything that harms it.

1. The officials listed below are to take the oath of office as follows

a) Before the President of the Cantonal Council

1. President of the High Court;

2. President of the Tax Court;

3. Secretary of the Council.

b) Before the Landammann

1. Chief Public Prosecutor;

2. Deputy Chief Public Prosecutor;

3. Senior Public Prosecutors;

4. Public Prosecutors;

5. Senior Juvenile Prosecutor;

6. Juvenile Prosecutors;

c) Before the President of the High Court

1. Officials shall take the official oath at the beginning of a term of office.

2. Officials elected during the term of office shall generally take the official oath before assuming office.

3. The following are responsible for issuing the necessary invitations: the State Chancellery for all officials who are to take the official oath before the President of the Cantonal Council or the Landammann; the presidents of the cantonal courts for the members and substitute members who are to take the oath before them.

1. The presidents or presiding officers of the courts inform the Judicial Administration Commission about the oaths of office they have taken at the beginning or during a term of office.

1. Civil servants, male or female, who are invited to take the official oath are entitled to reimbursement of travel expenses pursuant to Article 147ff of the Collective Labor Agreement of October 25, 2004.

1. This directive shall enter into force on August 1, 2005.

2. The directive concerning the taking of the oath of office of May 1, 2001, is repealed.
