Ordinance on the Spelling of Place Names - Nomenclature Commission

1. The government council appoints a Nomenclature Commission and its chairperson.

2. The commission consists of one representative each from the Office for Space and Economy and the Land Registry Office, as well as one to three experts from the linguistic or historical field, with linguistics being represented by at least one expert.

3. The chairperson votes at meetings; in the event of a tie, he or she casts the deciding vote.

1. The Nomenclature Commission establishes the spelling of place names.

1. As part of the official surveying process, the control surveyor records the local place names in consultation with the municipality on site.

2. The control surveyor documents the place names in a register and forwards it to the Office of Space and Economy for the Nomenclature Commission.

3. The same procedure shall be followed in the case of land consolidation, the preparation of introductory and overview plans, as well as other plan processing activities.

1. The Nomenclature Commission reviews the accuracy of the place names, considering the local pronunciation and spelling rules, corrects the register, and submits it to the municipality.

2. The municipality is free to make the register publicly available and to provide the residents with an appropriate opportunity to raise objections to the spelling of the place names.

3. The municipality may raise objections to the spelling with the Nomenclature Commission within two months after receiving the register.

4. The Nomenclature Commission decides on the spelling and submits its decision to the municipality.

5. The municipality may contest the decision of the Nomenclature Commission according to the provisions of the Administrative Justice Act.

1. The Office for Space and Economy compiles a directory of the place names in the prescribed spelling and submits this to the head of the Land Registry and to the cadastral engineer responsible for updates.

1. The Nomenclature Commission also decides on the spelling of new and the modification of existing place names.

2. In the recognized surveying works, place names are to be reviewed and modified if necessary.

1. Upon official request, the Nomenclature Commission reviews the designation of streets and squares.

1. The Office for Space and Economy communicates the names of the inhabited localities used in the official dealings of the Federal Administration to the Federal Department of Justice and Police.

1. This regulation shall enter into force on April 15, 1978. It shall be published.
